Overview

Below is information about two training series: 1) Effective Blended Learning: Student Engagement, Thinking and Choice, which starts in March, and 2) SCTS 4.0 Virtual Training Series, which were available through February 2021 only.

Effective Blended Learning: Student Engagement, Thinking, and Choice

NIET and the South Carolina Department of Education offered content for a new virtual training series for free to South Carolina educators called Blended Learning: Student Engagement, Thinking, and Choice. The trainings focused on hybrid and blended learning – or how to teach in environments that involve both virtual and in-person components. It was designed to support educators in all roles, including teachers, teacher leaders, school leaders, and district administrators. Higher education faculty and student teachers also participated.

In this two-module training, participants examined hybrid and blended instructional structures and strategies that support individual student needs and individualized learning. They analyzed hybrid instructional strategies through the planning, delivery, and assessment components of a lesson and identify steps to strengthen current instructional practices by utilizing blended and hybrid learning strategies that offer students critical thinking opportunities and choice.

Each module was 2 hours in length and was delivered in a virtual synchronous modality. The modules were sequential in content. (Visit the Agenda page for more details about each module.)

SCTS 4.0 Virtual Training Series: Available through February 2021

February was the last month for South Carolina educators to participate in the original three-part free series on the SCTS 4.0 virtual instructional strategies, which focused on transforming lessons into a virtual modality through planning, instructional practice, and the environment. Educators received six PD credits for renewal activity upon completion of the SCTS 4.0 virtual instruction series.

Educators left these sessions − centered on planning, instruction, and the environment  with an understanding of what the SCTS Teaching Standards look like when applied to online teaching. They obtained ideas for how to plan, transform, and strengthen virtual lessons; and awareness of how they improve student engagement and increase student growth in a virtual learning environment. There were also different options for teachers and principals to receive more tailored support based on their role. (Visit the Agenda page for more details about each session.)
