What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school (and the one that I taught) was English. I think that critical thinking skills are developed hand in hand with learning to read and write proficiently. Someone else said it better: "Writing is thinking." I loved getting to know my students and my classmates on a different level through their reactions to what we had read. Nowadays my favorite subject is science, but I didn't develop that passion until graduate school.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, preferably on a hiking trail.
