NIET Partner in Arizona Is a Global Education Prize Finalist. Vote for Southwest Junior High!

Southwest Junior High School in Arizona’s Gadsden Elementary School District #32 was named a Top 10 finalist for T4 Education’s 2026 World’s Best School Prizes in the category of Overcoming Adversity, an international spotlight celebrating its commitment to student success and educational excellence.

World’s Best School Prizes’ Overcoming Adversity category recognizes and celebrates schools that see adversity, challenges, and obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. These schools empower students and their communities to overcome challenges, build resilience, and create brighter futures, according to the prize description.

“This recognition is a proud moment for Southwest Junior High and the entire Gadsden Elementary School District community,” Superintendent Lizette Esparza said. “It reflects the dedication of our students, educators, families, and staff, who work together to create opportunities and support for every student.”

Located along the U.S.-Mexico border in San Luis, Arizona, Southwest Junior High School serves a unique and diverse student population. One hundred percent of students qualify for free- or reduced-price lunch, and nearly all students enter the district as English language learners. Despite these challenges, the school has consistently demonstrated strong academic outcomes and a commitment to preparing students for future success. Over the past three years, since Arizona began issuing district letter grades, Southwest Junior High School has consistently received a “B” rating.

NIET has partnered with Gadsden Elementary School District #32 for more than 15 years, advancing educational opportunities for students and supporting high-quality instruction.

“I have consistently been impressed by Southwest Junior High School’s leadership, commitment to excellence, and focus on preparing all students for postsecondary success,” said NIET Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Barnett. “Throughout our collaboration with the school, we have seen firsthand Southwest Junior High School’s ability to implement innovative programs effectively and with lasting impact.”

The school held a community assembly on June 25 to celebrate the announcement, bringing together students, educators, and local leaders.
