Coaching for Learner Autonomy: A Tool to Strengthen Teacher Practice

Learner autonomy requires teachers to provide opportunities for students to think critically, make decisions, and problem-solve in the classroom. With the right resources, coaches can take the first step to support teachers in making these moments come to life.

NIET’s Coaching for Learner Autonomy session at the 2026 NIET National Conference had instructional leaders explore practical ways to strengthen teacher moves that release responsibility to students. Through classroom examples, coaching scenarios, and collaborative reflection, participants engaged with NIET’s Coaching for Learner Autonomy Tool, a practical resource designed to help leaders strengthen teacher practice in ways that elevate student thinking.

What’s Inside?

NIET’s Coaching for Learner Autonomy Tool outlines four high-leverage teacher actions that support learner autonomy by creating opportunities for students to think, make decisions, and problem-solve independently. Coaches can walk through each action with classroom teachers and plan how to effectively use them based on individual classroom and student needs. Each section includes:

  • Aligned teacher moves
  • Reflective questions
  • Teacher leader moves
  • Coaching considerations to strengthen instructional practice

During the session, participants used the tool to identify the exact moments in a lesson where student thinking should be elevated. Rather than simply asking whether students were engaged, participants pinpointed how teacher moves either expanded or limited opportunities for students to reason, make choices, and reflect on their progress.

“My Favorite Part of This Session”: A Real-time Testimony

For Christy Spohn, a Master Teacher in Ascension Public Schools, the resource became immediately useful.

“The tool was my favorite part of this session,” Spohn shared. “It gave us a really tangible starting place to not only see what learner autonomy really looks and sounds like in the classroom, but it also helped me think about my role as a Master Teacher. In my role as I'm leading teachers, it made me consider if I am building their autonomy through my coaching. The tool helped me to make that connection.”

Designed for use in planning, walkthroughs, and coaching conversations, the Coaching for Learner Autonomy Tool helps instructional leaders provide targeted support that builds teacher clarity, confidence, and agency while promoting deeper student thinking and independence. For educators earlier in their careers, this tool can be transformative.

Spohn noted that if she had access to this resource as a newer teacher, it would have accelerated her understanding of building learner autonomy.

“It forces you to think about what effective learning actually looks like, what student thinking actually looks like, and what good reflection actually looks like,” she said. “When you can clearly see it, you have a pathway to achieve it.”

That clear pathway matters because learner autonomy is not built through chance. It is built through intentional teacher actions, strong coaching, and leadership systems that prioritize student thinking. When students have the support to take an active role in their learning journey, classrooms are filled with stronger thinkers, decision-makers, and ultimately, stronger learners.

NIET’s Coaching for Learner Autonomy Tool strengthens the bridge between effective teaching and empowered student learning. And as educators at the National Conference experienced firsthand, that bridge can deepen learner autonomy while also building the confidence and capacity of teachers themselves.

For school and district teams looking to continue this work, join NIET at the 2026 Summer Institute, June 9–10 in Indianapolis, for hands-on learning and team planning that will help generate excellence in teaching and learning in the 2026-2027 school year.
